CHATTAROY, WA -- The principal at Riverside High School in Chattaroy says students can wear the breast cancer awareness Bracelets today but they have to turn them inside out – otherwise they’ll risk suspension.
The controversy over the pink ‘I Heart Boobies’ Bracelets started Friday when principal John McCoy suspended nine students for wearing the Bracelets at school.
"I've received letters from students and three emails from parents and more phone calls from parents saying they don't think the bracelets were appropriate,” McCoy said Friday.
"In this case I felt very strongly that, even though it was used to promote a good cause, it was not appropriate in a high school setting."
Some students, however, felt differently.
"I think it’s ridiculous that they would suspend us for wearing something for a good cause that says boobies," Riverside student Dakota Jewell said.
Students were warned that if they wore the bracelets to school Monday they would be suspended on the spot. Still, students wore the bracelets Monday morning and as they entered the building they were told to either turn them inside out or go home.
The principal decided on the compromise because with the bracelets inside out you can’t see the ‘I Heart Boobies’ phrase, but you can still see the pink color which represents breast cancer awareness.
As of 9 a.m. Monday, only one female student has refused to turn her bracelet inside out and was sent home for the day.
